Frequently Asked Questions

How often am I required to help in the classroom?
The participating parent is required to help out twice a month in the classroom from 8:45am-12pm for each child enrolled in the program.  If you have one child enrolled, you would help out twice a month.  If you have two children enrolled, you would help out four times a month.

I am a working parent. Can a grandparent or other family member take my place as the participating parent?
Yes! We have many fathers, grandparents, and aunts help out in the classroom. As long as they are a relative and have a current TB test within the last four years, they may fill the role of participating parent.

What do I need to do as a participating parent?

You will need a TB test current within the last four years. On your workday, you will help out the teacher with setting out toys, preparing snack and assisting the children with projects. You are assigned a specific workday so you can plan your schedule.  You can trade with other parents as needed for vacations or other situations.

My child is not potty-trained. Is that a problem?

Your child does not need to be potty-trained to attend Bakersfield Parent Nursery.

Is BPN a licensed preschool?

Yes! We are a state licensed preschool. Teachers at BPN meet and exceed all state requirements for preschool (teachers) and are CPR and First Aid certified. BPN has been in Bakersfield for over fifty years!

Do you offer a full-time program?

No. BPN is a part-time program, Monday through Friday from 9am-12pm.

I would like to visit BPN. When can I come by?
Please call and we would be happy to set up a time that is convenient for you. We are open M-F from 9am-12pm.   We are located at 2080 Stine Rd. The nearest cross-streets are Ming and Stine. We are located behind the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

How can I enroll my child?
You may fill out the form on Contact Us or you may email us at bpn4690@sbcglobal.net or call 661-832-4690. We will mail you a contact sheet form. Once you fill that out and mail it back with a $60 non-refundable check, your child will be enrolled. We will send you the complete registration packet.

Do the children get a snack during the day?
Yes. Parents in each class rotate bringing a nutritious snack for all of the children in the class (approximately 15 children).

Are there any other financial requirements?
Each family is required to fund raise $100 per child. If you have one child in the program, you are required to raise $100. If you have two children in the program, you are required to raise $200. This can be done through the different fund raisers throughout the year (cookie dough, catalogs, etc.) and the SCRIP program (more information at www.escrip.com). We also have two fund raising events to help you meet your goal. Alternatively, families may write a check to the school to meet their obligation.

Once per year, we require a parent/relative from each family to help out for four hours on a Saturday to thoroughly clean the classrooms. This is called Maintenance Day and allows us to keep our costs down.  There are different dates throughout the school year to choose from. If a family does not want to participate in this, they may write a check to the school for $75.

How many children are in each class?
There are approximately 15 children in each class with a teacher and two participating parents. This gives us a ratio of 1 adult for 5 children!

How does the preschool communicate with parents?
BPN actively communicates with all parents. In addition to monthly newsletters, website updates and daily communication with the teachers, we have a monthly parent meeting. This meeting allows all parents to get current information and ask questions about the program, curriculum or upcoming events. In addition, it allows you to get to know the other parents in the program.

What curriculum does BPN use?
Bakersfield Parent Nursery’s curriculum is based on The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool.  It is a comprehensive, scientifically based early childhood curriculum that has been shown to improve cognitive and social/emotional outcomes in young children. It is linked with a valid and reliable assessment instrument,

The Creative Curriculum is based on the latest research on how children learn best and has been shown through experimental and quasi-experimental studies to improve classroom quality and promote the school readiness of preschool children. The Creative Curriculum meets all of the standards put forth for effective early childhood curricula by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS/SDE).

In addition, BPN offers a music program with instruction by Harmony Road Music School. This provides a great introduction to music and rhythm for young children.
